Prior to Decision Day, Lionel Messi achieved yet another significant accomplishment and assumed sole control of the Golden Boot contest, which was sponsored by Audi.

In Saturday's 4-0 victory over Atlanta United, the greatest of all time scored two goals for Inter Miami CF.  His ninth multi-goal game was the most he had ever had in a single MLS season.

After eight multi-goal games, Messi passed Stern John (Columbus, 1998), Mamadou Diallo (Tampa Bay, 2000), and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (LA Galaxy, 2019).

With his two goals so far this season, Messi has two more than LAFC talisman Denis Bouanga, who is vying for the Golden Boot.  With 44 goals this season, Messi is five goals short of the single-season record established by LAFC's Carlos Vela in 2019. Messi is the front-runner to win the Landon Donovan MLS MVP award for the first time in a row.

Next Saturday (6 p.m. ET | MLS Season Pass), the Herons, who secured homefield advantage in Round One of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs, will play Nashville, South Carolina, to end the regular season.
