Nigerians were cautioned by the National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Wednesday not to use the Ivorian skin-lightening cosmetic product Caro White.
The warning was included in a public notification (Public Alert No. 15/2023) published on NAFDAC's official X handle. It stated that, according to the European Union Rapid Alerts System, Caro White, an Ivorian skin-lightening beauty lotion, had been found to contain a high concentration of kojic acid.
The product, in the Agency's opinion, does not adhere to the Cosmetic Products Regulation.
Caro White has a high content of kojic acid, exceeding the permitted maximum concentration of 1%, according to NAFDAC. the EU Scientific Committee for Consumer Safety (SCCS) came to a conclusion.
The EU's Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) has recalled Caro White Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion; NAFDAC is informing the public of this action.
The EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) concluded that the product's excessive concentration of kojic acid (beyond the permitted maximum concentration of 1%) renders it in violation of the Cosmetic Products Regulation.
Elevated levels of kojic acid have been linked to possible endocrine disruptive effects.
"Importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers are recommended to exercise caution and attention within the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the above described product, even though it is not included in the NAFDAC database.
It is important to carefully inspect the product's physical condition and validity. People who own the product should stop using it or selling it, according to the statement, and turn in any leftover inventory to the NAFDAC office that is closest to them.
